Know God

How do we know God?

You were created to know God in a personal way—to have a relationship with Him, through His Son, Jesus Christ. How do you start a relationship with God?

1. Realize that you are a sinner.

No matter how good a life you try to live, we all still fall miserably short of God’s standards. That’s because we are all sinners. The Bible says: “No one is good-not even one” (Romans 3:10). You can’t become the person you desire to be without Jesus Christ.

2. Recognize that Jesus Christ died on the cross for you.

The Bible tells us that “God showed His great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners” (Romans 5:8). This is the good news! God loves you so much that he sent his only Son to die in your place when you least deserved it.

3. Repent of your sin.

The Bible commands each of us to, “repent of your sins and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped away” (Acts 3:19). The word repent means to express your sadness to God, because you have sinned.  You can ask him to change the direction of your life. Instead of running from God, you can run toward him.

4. Become a follower of Jesus.

Becoming a Jesus-follower is not merely believing in a religion or going to church. It’s having Christ take residence in your life and heart. It is telling him that you want to be his servant. It is about submitting your life to him. Jesus said, “Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in . . .” (Revelation 3:20). If you would like to have a relationship with Christ, simply pray this prayer and mean it in your heart:

“Dear Jesus, I know that I am a sinner. I believe that you died on the cross for my sins. I am sorry for my sins. I trust that your death on the cross paid the penalty for all of the things I’ve done wrong. I want to follow you the rest of my life. I want to make you my personal Lord and Savior. Amen.”
